Optional visits on Wednesday 8 September

Considering the proximity of Portugal to the sea and its capacity to protect and explore marine resources, the visit to CEPAM (Centre for Extension and Environmental and Marine Research) - ECOMARE (Laboratory for innovation and sustainability of marine biological resources of the University of Aveiro) will give a significant overview of several projects in this area. It will show-case the multiple life-support systems available for experimentation with marine organisms, namely the living library of marine invertebrates (namely tropical photosynthetic corals), the systems for experimentation with seaweeds and photosynthetic sea slugs, as well as the pilot-scale facilities for integrated multi-trophic aquaculture and hydroponics of halophyte plants.

Situated near Aveiro, the Bairrada region is an important Portuguese winemaking region. Aliança Underground Museum is the first underground museum where sparkling wines, still wines and brandies are aging in perfect harmony with nine art collections. The tour will give an overview of the art collections - covering areas such as archaeology, ethnography, mineralogy, paleontology, tiles, ceramics, tins and Indian culture spanning millions of years - throughout the traditional wine cellars of Aliança Vinhos de Portugal. At the end of the tour, visitors are invited to taste the Aliança Sparkling Wine.
