City walk followed by a Welcome Reception aboard the Museum Ship Suomen Joutsen on Monday 2 June
Suomen Joutsen is a steel-hulled full-rigged ship with three square rigged masts. Built in 1902 by Chantiers de Penhoët in St. Nazaire, France. In 1930, she was acquired by the Government of Finland, refitted to serve as a school ship for the Finnish Navy and given her current name. Suomen Joutsen made eight long international voyages before the Second World War and later served in various support and supply roles during the war. From 1961 on she served as a stationary seamen's school for the Finnish Merchant Navy. In 1991, Suomen Joutsen was donated to the city of Turku and became a museum ship.
The walk and Welcome Reception are free of charge, but pre-registration is mandatory.
Conference Dinner preceded by a Reception at Sibelius Museum on Tuesday 3 June
Jean Sibelius, born Johan Julius Christian Sibelius (8 December 1865 – 20 September 1957) was a Finnish composer of the late Romantic and early modern periods. He is widely regarded as his country's greatest composer, and his music is often credited with having helped Finland develop a stronger national identity when the country was struggling from several attempts at Russification in the late 19th century.
The core of his oeuvre is his set of seven symphonies, which, like his other major works, are regularly performed and recorded in Finland and countries around the world.
The atmospheric restaurant Grädda is housed in a magnificent Imperial-style wooden house built in 1832, situated in verdant garden surroundings on the east bank of the River Aura. The building has a long history and has served as the residence and workplace of doctors and researchers, as well as Robert W. Ekman, who painted the large altar frescoes at Turku Cathedral. The peaceful location near the centre of Turku offers a wonderful setting for this year’s Conference Dinner.
