Deep Eutectic Systems: Is it a sustainable alternative for the extraction of natural products?
Bio
Alexandre Paiva has completed his PhD with a Marie-Curie research grant in Hamburg, Germany, in Bioengineering and Thermodynamics in 2008. In the same year, he earned a Marie Curie Reintegration Grant and a Portuguese Foundation’s funded post-doc grant, which allowed his return to Portugal to the Biocatalysis & Bioenergy lab that he now leads. His research is mainly focused on the valorization of agroindustrial by-products using sustainable technologies such as sub-, supercritical fluids, deep eutectic systems and biocatalysis. Since then, he has been involved in 10 Portuguese funded projects, being the Principal Investigator (PI) of 3 of them. He has been involved in 3 Industry-oriented projects funded by the Portuguese government and was the PI of 3 projects financed by national and international companies. Alexandre was member of the management committee of the COST Action Greenering and he is part of the team of the HORIZON-HLTH-2021-IND-07-01 project IMPACTIVE. Alexandre Paiva has attracted/help attract more than 1.1 Million EUR in projects. Alexandre Paiva is first author of one of the most cited papers published by a Portuguese research group on deep eutectic solvents with more than 2163 citations (Jan 2026 – Scopus). Alexandre Paiva was scientific advisor of EXMceuticals and he is also the CEO of DES Solutio Lda., a spin-off from NOVA. DES Solutio has the objective of facilitating the implementation of his research into industry and has attracted the interest of international companies and has running contracts with two international companies. He has 4 patent applications, 130 papers, 2 book chapters, 2 invited manuscripts, an h-index of 43 and 7802 citations (Scopus).
